8 Easy Décor hacks to rethink your interiors on a budget

If you are looking to revamp your home, it is important to know the basic rules of interior design before you get started. Basic Elements such as proportions and deciding the best size furniture for each room is key.

ONE: Give your furniture space

Do not over crowd key furniture pieces. As a rule of thumb, allow 45cm between seating and a central coffee table. Any less than this can feel like a squeeze, but too much more can prove uncomfortable when reaching for a drink or book. When choosing furniture make sure it doesn’t overpower the room. The proportions need to be right. A coffee table for example should be about two thirds of the length of a sofa.

 TWO: Choose a statement piece

Allow once focal/ dominant point in the room. This might be an oversized piece of furniture or a bold patterned rug or furniture item. It could even be a piece of feature art.Whatever it may be let it steal the limelight. If the feature item has a bold colour, try and incorporate it throughout the room creating a cohesive look.

THREE: Fake height

Do you have ow ceilings? Never mind you can still create an illusion to make your ceilings feel tall. Choose low-profile furniture such as sofas and coffee tables to create the illusion of room height. You can also create the illusion of height mixing low profile furniture with tall, slim bookcases hat draw the eye upwards. In addition, paint the walls and skirting boards and ceiling in he same colour this will blur the lines of where the walls end and the ceiling begins

FOUR: Pile on the layers

Layering several fabrics, prints, colours, and textures in a manner that brings character and warmth to a room. Layers allow a house to feel lived in and homely. Find one dominant fabric initially, perhaps the curtains or rug. Then start layering by adding smaller fabrics for cushions and lampshades. Think of your décor in layers – build it up in colour, pattern, texture, lighting, artwork, house plants and books.

FIVE: Hang artwork at the perfect height

Hanging pictures and artwork can be a big commitment and you want to make sure you are doing at right. A key rule is to not hang the pictures or artwork too high. Remember to five them “human scale” so that they are at eye level. Eye level is generally at 145cm from the floor to the centre of the picture. There are exceptions to this, having little artworks located on bookcases or fireplaces can be a nice touch.

SIX: Add more mirrors for a view beyond

It is no surprise that mirrors can extend a space making it feel larger than it is. Consider a large floor stand up mirror to style your interiors. In addition, reflecting views in it or light allowing it to expand the room dramatically.

SEVEN: Create scale with lighting

Have a light bulb moment when considering lighting. When choosing a pendant or chandelier to hang above the dining table, aim for a fitting that is between half and two-thirds of the width of the table. This will help with the proportions. The same applies to long slim fittings, by maintaining the same half-to-two-thirds ratio, but applying it to the table’s length, the light fitting will be a harmonious part of the room.

EIGHT: Dress your windows

Measure up for the perfect window dressings. Window dressings come in many shapes and sizes however if you have a small window, you want ti give the illusion it is large by setting the curtains outside the edge of the window to frame it. Having curtains that go the whole way across a wall will give the room softness and a feeling of space. Also, floor to ceiling can help make a room look taller.

All of these tips can make a huge difference in the way that a property feels, presents. It can be the difference between a home and sanctuary. It is an opportunity to display your taste and by sticking to the se riles can still achieve a sense of balance and style on a budget.
